(B)

Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to

your friends and family?

Texting messages is becoming very popular. But scientists

have discovered that texting can give us problems with our

hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling (肿

胀) in our fingers and wrists. Our fingers are not made for

pushing small buttons, again and again. Scientists call this

problem RSI.

We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many patients with RSI.

She said we needed to see how much time we were spending in typing text messages.

If we are spending more than 15 minutes at once, we have problems in the future.

We also talked with Dr. Harjeet Deepa who treats RSI patients. He told us that

the youngest patient he had treated was a five-year-old girl. She wasn’t doing well

at school, so her parents took her for treatment. It was found that she had such

bad RSI in her hands. She couldn’t hold a pencil.

As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together.

Texting with smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons.

Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can also cause the same problem.

So, more and more people could find themselves with RSI.

Many university students and teenagers have RSI, as they do not know the risks

of spending so much time using computers, video games and mobile phones. If we don’

t do something about this, too many young people will grow up in terrible pain.

54.

Who were interviewed about the problem RSI in this passage?

A. The writer and a little girl.

B. Harriet Wilson and Harjeet Deepa.

C. Three scientists.

D. Four doctors.

55.

The underlined part “at once” in the third paragraph means

“ ▲ ”.

A. right away

B. at one time C. at last

D. at first

56.

From the passage we know ▲ .

A. it’s better to use a larger phone with bigger buttons

B. it’s worse to spend less time typing the text messages

C. using the computer keyboard will never cause the problem RSI

D. University students who have RSI know it’s dangerous to do too much texting

(C)

Sometimes we make friends with unexpected people. For example, who will think

that a spider(蜘蛛) makes friends with a pig? But in E. B. White's novel "Charlotte's

Web", this is exactly what happens.

In the story, Wilbur is an ill-fated (倒霉的) pig. When he is born, he is so

small that the farmer decides to end the pig's life. Luckily, the farmer's daughter

stops him from killing Wilbur and volunteers to raise the pig in a barnyard (谷

仓前的空地) .

Wilbur grows day by day and makes many friends in the barnyard, including the

spider, Charlotte. However, one day a sheep tells Wilbur that he will be killed as

dinner. But Charlotte has tried her best to save her friend from this danger. By

making words such as "famous pig" in her web, she makes the farmer believe that Wilbur

is some kind of supernatural (神奇的) animal, too important to kill.

After Wilbur is saved, Charlotte is so tired that she finally dies.

Unusually, the writer makes a spider the main character of the

book. Spiders are tiny animals that make many people feel afraid.

Charlotte does everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive. It

shows how a strong friendship can last through the worst possible

times.

Who would you like to make friends with if you could?

57.

The purpose of this passage is to ▲ .

A. tell us a true story about a pair of unusual friends

B. describe how a spider makes friends with a pig

C. give us a main introduction about “Charlotte’s Web” D. encourage people to make friends with animals

58.

The writer E. B. White is trying to tell us ▲ .

A. Charlotte does her best to save Wilbur because he is really amazing B. a real friend is the one who helps you when you are in trouble

C. the spiders are not afraid when you make friends with them D. we’d better make friends with unexpected man because they can help us

59.

We can learn from the passage that ▲ .

A. E.B.White’s novel Charlotte’s web is exactly from what really happens. B. when Wilbur is born, he is so small that the farmer decides to raise him in

a barnyard.

C. one day a sheep tells Charlotte that Wilbur will be killed for dinner. D. Charlotte managed to save him by making the farmer believe Wilbur is

supernatural.

Going to a friend’s house is very exciting. You may spend time with a friend and get to see where he lives. So remember to be polite.
When to arrive? The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you, you need to get to his home on time. If your friend tells you to come “about 3:00”, that means you can arrive a little bit after 3:00. But usually it is a good idea to arrive at the right time. What to bring? Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend’s house. This could be a box of chocolates for you two to share, or maybe a movie that you can watch together. You can also bring some flowers. A little gift is a nice way to show your friend that it is exciting for you to be at his house. How to greet? When you visit your friend’s house, you may also meet his parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. or Mrs. Smith. This will show them more respect(尊敬) and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Also, it’s a good way of showing respect to call them Madam or Sir. It is a cool thing to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend’s parents, and you will be invited again!
